Sunday (30/07/17) saw the 2017 Renfrewshire County Championship take place at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club, Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire. A small field of 46 was made up of a number of players heading to this weeks Scottish Amateur at Prestwick and it included the defending champion and Scottish Internationalist Matthew Clark, Kilmacolm.
With the course in perfect condition it was the wild Scottish summer that controlled the scoring on the day with both rounds returning a Reduction Only (74) CSS. The wind and rain in the morning round saw poor scoring with only 2 scores of par or better. Matthew Clark 68 and Jim McCullagh also Kilmacolm scoring a excellent round of 70.
Round 2 was no better in terms of scoring thanks to a very strong wind which kept the rain away but it also keep the scoring high with no players equalling the Par of 70. After 2 tough rounds of golf the talent of Clark was too strong for the field, Matthew returned a 36 hole aggregate of 140 to win, the County Strokeplay Championship for a fourth time, by 7 shots from his nearest competitor Andrew Farmer also Kilmacolm on 147. Matthew continues to dominate golf in Renfrewshire and this will hopefully prove a good warm up for this weeks amateur where he is hoping to secure a Home International spot for the third consecutive year.
A special thanks must go to Ranfurly Castle Golf Club for hosting this event.
