Graham Smith is crowned RGU Seniors Champion

Division 2 winner, Mr Vermeulen receiving his prize
Graham Smith of Bonnyton Golf Club has become the winner of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Seniors Championship for 2017 after a controlled round at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Wednesday 17th May.
Graham played the front nine in level par before starting back with 2 birdies to really set himself up on the way home. However a couple of bogeys on the back nine almost unsettled him, but a strong par finish over the final few holes saw him home.
In the first game of the day, the Immediate Past President of the RGU, Graham McGee set the pace with a steady if unspectacular game relying on his usual short game to hold his score together and finished in second place.
Winner of Division 2 was Chris Vermeulen – Fereneze with a 26 handicap, went out in 41 but lost his way on the back nine with a collection of 7’s and an 8 for 54, but still good enough to beat his fellow competitors, oh what could have been!
For once the sun shone on the RGU and the weather over the day was spectacular with constant sunshine and very few clouds.
The rain earlier in the week had the course in great condition and the fairways, now off preferred lies were tight but fair and the greens were a joy to putt on.
This is the second year that the RGU have successfully played this competition at “The Mini Gleneagles” in Renfrewshire and like the “Masters” in Augusta we would like to think that we have found a permanent home for the event.
The entry this year was around 90 and we would hope to see this increased in future years.
The Renfrewshire Golf Union would like to thank Kilmacolm Golf Club for the use of their facilities to host this event, and to congratulate them on the condition of the course and the in house facilities provided.
